Dr. Vikram Sarabhai was an Indian scientist and astronomer.
Dr. Sarabhai (born in 1919) was an influential Indian scientist, visionary and one of the pioneers of the Indian space program. He is often regarded as the founding father of the Indian space program. His interests covered various scientific domains, including cosmic rays, space physics and satellite communication.
He played an important role in establishing the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Indian Institute of Management (IIM). The Physical Research Laboratory (PRl) was founded in 1947 by Dr. Vikram Sarabhai. The laboratory conducts research in astronomy and astrophysics. He initiated space research and helped develop nuclear power in India. He also set up the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station in southern India.
He initiated programs to take education to remote villages through satellite communication. Dr. Sarabhai was passionate about science education and believed that space technology could contribute significantly to the educational sector.
He received widespread recognition for his work, including the Padma Bhushan in 1966 and the Padma Vibhushan (awarded posthumously in 1972).
