Nepal

“Namaste! Swagatam

The capital city of Nepal is Kathmandu. Nepal is a country in South Asia between India and  China. It is in the Himalayas, a tall mountain range in Asia. Their new year begins in Baishakh, which is around mid-April. Nepal has 36 public holidays in the year.

The currency of Nepal is called Nepalese rupee (Rs, रू).

History: It has recently become a secular country, but before it was the only Hindu kingdom in the world. Nepal is a very important pilgrimage place for both Hindus and Buddhists. The Kingdom of Nepal was established and started a campaign of unifying what would form the modern territories of Nepal. Nepal became a federal republic and was formally renamed the 'Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal’.

Nepal is a multi-ethnic and multi-lingual society. Historical records suggest that Siddhartha Gautama, who later became known as the Buddha, was born in Lumbini, Nepal, around 623 BCE. The Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, realizing the truth of existence and achieving nirvana in life. Lumbini remains an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists worldwide and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Geography: Nepal is a landlocked country nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas. Nepal is divided into three regions. These are the Mountains, Hills, and Terai (or plains). Despite its relatively small area, Nepal has very diverse climatic conditions, ranging from tropical in the south to alpine in the north.

The Sherpa people live high in Nepal near the mountain. The term ‘yeti’ itself is a merger of the Sherpa words ‘yah’ (rock or cliff) and ‘teh’ (animal). The yak is an animal that lives from 2,200 meters up to 5,500 meters of elevation above sea level. Nepalese mountains are very favorable for yak to live.

Agriculture: The major cash crops are sugarcane, jute, cotton and rubber; and the major cereal crops are paddy, maize and wheat. Cardamom, ginger, garlic and turmeric are also cultivated.

Cuisine: The national cuisine of Nepal is Dhindo and Gundruk. Gundruk-Dhindo is the most common combination served in farming communities.

Sports: Football is the most popular sport in Nepal. Nepal's national sport is volleyball. The country's mountainous terrain has made it a haven for adventure enthusiasts, particularly in the field of mountaineering and other related sports. Nepal offers an extensive network of trekking trails, providing a range of options for trekkers of various skill levels.

The Himalayan Trust is a charitable organization with a rich history rooted in the spirit of compassion and service. Established in 1960 by Sir Edmund Hillary, the renowned New Zealand mountaineer and adventurer, the trust was created with the primary goal of supporting the people of Nepal, home to the legendary Mount Everest.

Sir Edmund and Louise Hillary founded the Himalayan Trust in the 1960s. Ever since then, they’ve inspired New Zealanders to give their time, money and support to help the people of Nepal through the Himalayan Trust. Education has been a focal point of their efforts, with numerous schools built and scholarships provided to students, ensuring that the younger generation has access to quality education.

Edmund Hillary, (born in 1919), New Zealand mountain climber and Antarctic explorer (with the Tibetan mountaineer Tenzing Norgay), was the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest.
