Chess is a two-player strategy board game played on a checkered gameboard with 64 squares arranged in an 8×8 grid. Each player starts with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns.
The objective of the game is to checkmate the opponent's king, which means the king is under attack and there is no legal move to escape the attack. Chess is a game of skill, strategy, and foresight. It has been shown to improve cognitive abilities such as memory, problem-solving, and decision-making. Chess is also a popular competitive sport, with national and international tournaments held around the world.
Chess is believed to have originated in India during the Gupta Empire around the 6th century AD. From there, it spread to Persia and then to the Islamic world, where it evolved into its current form.
