Peru is a country located in western South America. The capital is Lima. The official language is Spanish and the currency is the Nuevo Sol.
Geography: Peru is home to nearly 20 million acres of wetlands, located mainly in its Andes and Amazon region. It is bordered by Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, and the Pacific Ocean. Lake Titicaca is a large freshwater lake in the Andes mountains on the border of Bolivia and Peru.
Peru's most important exports are fish, gold and other metals, oil, coffee, sugar, and cotton. The potato, a centuries-old food with origins in the South American Andes region, made its way to Europe in the 16th century then spread around the world. Potatoes are a staple in the food supply chain, providing a nutritious option for many households. The Food and Agriculture Organization has welcomed the decision to celebrate the International Day of the Potato annually on May 30th.
Quinoa is primarily grown in South America, particularly in countries like Peru and Bolivia. It thrives in the Andean region's high-altitude environments.
History: Peruvian territory was home to the Inca food supply. Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Inca site in Peru, South America. It was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Archaeologists have found evidence of wind instruments, including flutes, in the ruins of Caral. Peru was a Spanish colony until 1821. Did You Know that Rabindranath Tagore visited Peru in 1924? Tagore visited Latin America, invited by the government of Peru to the 'Centennial Celebrations' of its independence. Spanish is still the main language of the people, although many also speak Quechua, the Inca language.
Wildlife: The Andean Condor, known as the heaviest and one of the largest flying birds in the world, boasts a wingspan of 3m. The Humboldt Penguins are an endangered species in Peru. Llamas and alpacas have been an intrinsic part of local culture and folklore for thousands of years. The Spectacled Bear (known locally as jukumari), the Andean spectacled bear is the last remaining short-faced bear in the world.
Sports: The most sought sports in Peru are soccer and volleyball while traditionally, they played cockfighting, bullfighting, and racing.
Peru is known for its rich history, including the ancient Inca civilization, the Andes mountains, the Amazon rainforest and coastal deserts. Many people visit Peru's long Pacific coast or the Amazon jungle.
