Switzerland (Helvetia, how the country was called in ancient times), has a rich history and folklore that spans back thousands of years. The country has a unique cultural heritage that has been shaped by its geography, language, and political history. The official languages of Switzerland are German, French, Italian, and Romansh.

Geography of Switzerland: Switzerland is a landlocked country located in central Europe. It is bordered by Germany to the north, Austria and Liechtenstein to the east, Italy to the south and France to the west. The country is divided into three main geographic regions: the Swiss Alps, the Swiss plateau and the Jura Mountains. Switzerland is known for its many lakes, the largest of which is Lake Geneva. The country also has several major rivers including the Rhine and the Rhône. The Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland is indeed the world's longest railway tunnel.
History of Switzerland: The area that is now Switzerland was inhabited by Celtic tribes, before it was conquered by the Roman Empire. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the region was invaded by Germanic tribes. During World War I and World War II, Switzerland remained neutral and was able to maintain its independence and economic prosperity.
Flora and Fauna: The Alpine region is known for its unique and diverse flora which includes many different types of mountain flowers and coniferous trees. Some of the most iconic mountain flowers found in the Alps include the edelweiss and the gentian.
The coniferous forests of the Alps are home to a variety of tree species including spruce, fir, beech, oak and maple trees which all play important ecological roles in the region's ecosystem. The country is also known for its production of fruits including apples, pears and cherries.
Switzerland is home to a variety of wildlife, including several species of deer, wild boar, foxes and badgers. The rocky slopes of the Swiss Alps are home to the Alpine ibex. These wild goats have padded hooves that make them expert climbers.
St. Bernard dogs are a breed of working dogs that are historically associated with the Alps. Switzerland has a diverse bird population such as eagles and hawks. The turaco is the national bird of Switzerland.
Swiss education system: Switzerland is proud of its outstanding education system. Primary, lower secondary and upper secondary level schools with highly motivated teachers are the backbone of the school system. Did You Know that Rabindranath Tagore visited the Switzerland in 1930?
CERN (located near Geneva) is a major centre for nuclear research. It is home to the world's largest particle accelerator (a machine that studies atoms).
Business & Economy of Switzerland: Switzerland is renowned for its banking and financial services sector. Zurich and Geneva are major global financial centers. Swiss banks are known for their stability, discretion and expertise in wealth management. UBS Group AG is a Swiss-based multinational investment bank and financial services company headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland. UBS had been in existence for approximately 160 years. Credit Suisse was founded in 1856 to fund the development of Switzerland's rail system.
Cultural Life: Swiss culture is reflected in its many traditional customs and practices. William Tell is a legendary figure in Swiss history and folklore. Heidi is a famous novel written by Swiss author Johanna Spyri.
Popular Swiss foods include cheese fondue, raclette, rosti (a dish made from grated potatoes) and Swiss chocolate. Switzerland has many traditional festivals and events throughout the year. The Helvetica font is a typeface that was created in Switzerland.
Modern structures designed by famous architects such as Le Corbusier and Mario Botta. Le Corbusier was involved in the planning and design of the city of Chandigarh in India. His work in Chandigarh includes the High Court, Assembly Building, and the Secretariat. He was a Swiss-French architect, designer, painter, urban planner and writer.
Swiss music and dance are an important part of the country's cultural heritage, with a wide range of styles and traditions. Yodelling, alpine horns and folk music are all popular.
Sports such as chess, badminton, soccer, tennis, skiing, snowboarding, and ice hockey are very popular in Switzerland. Alpine skiing is the discipline in which Switzerland has won the most medals at the Olympic Games (66).
