Solar Energy
Harnessing the power of sunlight using solar panels to generate electricity.
Cochin International Airport, India
This Indian airport, the seventh busiest in the country, is the first airport in the world to run completely off solar power. In fact, it's not only 100 percent clean energy, its solar farm actually gives back energy to the electrical grid. The solar project, located near one of the airport's terminals, has been a years-long project.
The Benban Solar Park, Egypt
Egypt's Sustainable Energy: Benban - which is in Aswan province - took 3 years to build, is 37 sq km and will generate 1.5 GW. It will be able to power more than 1,000,000 homes. It was launched in 2018 as part of Egypt's Sustainable Energy Strategy 2035. The park includes 41 solar power plants, which together can generate up to 3.8 terawatt-hours of electricity annually, enough to power over a million homes.
The project is a significant contributor to Egypt's goal of sourcing 42% of its electricity from renewable sources. The solar park has also been a major source of employment, providing thousands of jobs during its construction and ongoing operations. Additionally, the project has played a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions, estimated at two million tonnes per year.
The Benban Solar Park in Egypt, one of the largest solar parks in the world, is now complete and fully operational.
