Nelson Mandela International Day

Nelson Mandela International Day falls on July 18 and pays tribute to the anti-apartheid activist. Mandela was a South African politician who served as the country's first black president from 1994 to 1999. He spent 27 years in prison due to his fight against apartheid. Additionally, he served as the secretary-general of the Non-Aligned Movement from 1998 to 1999.

Mandela wrote "Long Walk to Freedom: The Autobiography of Nelson Mandela". This autobiography chronicles Mandela's life, from his early years, through his 27 years in prison, to his presidency and work as a global statesman. The book "Conversations with Myself" offers a more personal insight into Nelson Mandela's thoughts and experiences, featuring a collection of letters, diary entries, and other writings.

Globally regarded as an icon of democracy and social justice, Mandela received more than 250 honors, including the Nobel Peace Prize. He is deeply respected within South Africa and is often referred to as the "Father of the Nation." In 2009, the UN General Assembly declared July 18 as Nelson Mandela International Day, commemorating his birthday. Mandela was born on July 18, 1918.
